"DAI." LIKE THE OPPOSITE OF NIGHT.

I'm a designer and painter currently living in Baltimore and studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

My design is informed by art history and the handmade because I was in love with Goya, Hammershøi, and Bellows long before I found affection for Dwiggins or Glaser. Type design and lettering enthrall me more than any other aspect of graphic design and I think it’s because the product is both a tool and an object of beauty. Type draws on the history of media, eliciting specific, often subconscious responses from readers.

Also, an honest profile of myself would not be complete without mention of my love for cooking. I'm usually thinking about Saturday’s dinner while eating Thursday’s lunch.

VELOCIPEDE STENCIL

The Velocipede Bike Project in Baltimore is a wonderful cooperative where cyclists of all skill levels can exchange volunteer time at the shop for mechanical service, use of specialized tools, and second-hand parts. As Velocipede renovated their space in early 2011, I designed this font for use as a labeling stencil on their vast shelves of organized parts. The type integrates racy curves and art-deco details from the co-op's logo with the logistics of a stencil.
